TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) hollow fiber membrane spinning is a technique for producing microporous membranes via temperature change. The core principle is to dissolve a polymer at high temperature in a high boiling, low volatility solvent to form a homogeneous solution, then extrude it through a spinneret. During cooling after extrusion, the system undergoes liquid–liquid or solid–liquid phase separation, ultimately solidifying to form a polymer rich phase and a solvent rich phase. Subsequent extraction removes the solvent; the space previously occupied by the solvent rich phase becomes the membrane’s microporous structure.
A TIPS hollow fiber membrane spinning equipment mainly consists of four core sections: melt extrusion system, phase separation and cooling system, extraction and drying system, and winding and post treatment system. The hollow fiber membrane spinning system performance and stability determine the quality and properties of the hollow fiber membrane. Leveraging 11 years of experience and R&D, Trustech has upgraded the SteadyiCore Ultra 2.0 Heating System, TitanMix Pro 4.0 Mixing System, SmartCoil Elite 3.0 Automatic Winding, and StoutDrive 2.0 motor drive setup. These Trustech technologies precisely control temperature and heat transfer uniformity, automate take up to save labor, thereby enhancing hollow fiber membrane spinning machine stability and reliability, reducing setup time and production downtime, and increasing overall spinning efficiency by 7.4% compared with pre-upgrade levels.
Core sections of a TIPS production line TIPS
Melt extrusion system
Control parameters: temperature, pressure, screw speed. Extrusion temperature must be precisely controlled to maintain a homogeneous solution and avoid thermal degradation due to local overheating; pressure must be stable to ensure flowability;
Phase separation and cooling system
Control parameters: cooling rate, cooling medium temperature. The cooling rate directly influences pore morphology and should be controlled via air cooling or a liquid coagulation bath;
Extraction and drying system
Control parameters: type of extractant, extraction time, drying temperature. The extractant should be low-toxicity and environmentally friendly; extraction time must be sufficient to remove residual diluent; drying temperature should be moderate to avoid fiber deformation or pore collapse.
Winding and post treatment system
Control parameters: winding tension, cutting length, packaging method. Winding tension should be uniform to prevent fiber stretching or breakage.
